Everything You Need to Know About DC Fans

Direct current fans, otherwise known as DC fans incorporate the latest fan technology on the market making them the best option for cooling.

DC fan motors rely on permanent magnets in order to attract and repel a rotor around the axis using electronic switching. They are powered with a fixed power voltage which lets them operate at the necessary speed for optimum cooling. Typical voltage values for DC fans are 5V, 12V, 24V and 48V.

This makes DC fans more efficient and quieter as well as having a longer battery life and greater speed/mode controls. Recent technological advances in DC technology now mean they can be used in both residential and commercial/industrial environments.

Popular examples of products that incorporate DC fan technology include extractor fans, desk fans, tower fans and pedestal fans.

What are the Benefits of a DC Fan?

More Energy Efficient – DC fans are widely regarded as the most energy efficient type of fans. They consume up to 70% les energy to product the same output as traditional AC fans. So a 25-watt DC fan will yield the same results as a 100-watt AC fan.

This makes them perfect for a wide range of applications from home use to larger environments such as warehouses and restaurants, as they can kept operating all the time without incurring high electricity bills.

Low noise level – DC fans make use of a new type (sin180) of electronically commuted motor (ECM). This makes them ultra-efficient, incredibly quiet and perfect for environments where noise level is a huge factor.

Low voltage – DC fans generally tend to use less voltage compared to AC fans making them extremely energy efficient and potentially less dangerous.

Why Should I use a DC Fan?

Sleeping Aid - These days, many people are choosing to use fans in bedrooms to help with restless sleepers. Whether for adults or young children, it is an increasingly popular solution. In the past, many people have tried to use older AC fans for this purpose, but the noise generated from the AC motor had made it difficult to get to sleep. DC fans remove this issue entirely. Their whisper quiet motor means the only noise you will hear from them at night is caused by the airflow. As these fans also use far less energy than traditional AC fans, you can leave them running throughout the night without racking up exorbitant energy bills.

Greater Control – Due to their upgraded technology DC fans now offer many more features such as sleep modes, nature modes, thermostatic control to keep the temperature in the room constant & a massively increased range of speeds for your personal preference.

Save Money – If you chose to use a fan while you sleep or to keep you cool in the summer months, you can do so with a DC fan safe in the knowledge that you can keep costs low.

*An AC to DC convertor may be required to use a DC fan if an AC fan was used previously. This is because AC fans are powered by an alternating voltage source, whereas, DC fans are powered by a constant voltage source.
