How to Get the Most From your Air Conditioning Unit

Summer is here and that means it's time to start thinking about how you're going to keep your home cool and comfortable over the next few months. Whether you have an air conditioning unit installed or are considering getting one, these hints and tips will provide advice on how to get the most out of your air con unit so that you can stay cool even when it’s hot outside.

These are our top 6 tips!

  1. Check the filters
  2. Keep it clean
  3. Keep the area around the unit clear
  4. Use a programmable thermostat
  5. Keep windows and doors closed
  6. Switch off any appliances that don’t have to be on

1. Check the filters

The first thing you should do is check the filters. If the filters are dirty, they will need to be replaced. Dirty filters can block airflow and cause the air conditioner to work harder, which can lead to higher energy bills. It's always important to refer to the manufacturer's instruction booklet to know how to check your filters. If your air conditioner is a wall split unit, you must hire an air conditioning professional that is F Gas registered for any service or maintenance work.

2. Keep it clean

Another important tip is to keep your air conditioning unit clean. Dust and dirt can build up on the coils and other components, which can cause the unit to work harder and less efficiently. To clean your unit, simply turn it off and use a soft brush or cloth to remove any dirt or dust.

3. Keep the area around the unit clear

It is important to keep the area around the air conditioner unit clear. If there are any obstructions, such as furniture or plants, it can block airflow and cause the unit to work harder.

4. Use a programmable thermostat

If you have a programmable thermostat, you can set it to turn on before you come home from work or school so that the house is already cool when you arrive. This can help to save energy and money.

In addition, you have the option to set the unit to a desired temperature. Typically, it is recommended for a cooled room in summer to be maintained between 23-26°C. Due to low indoor humidity, the temperature will feel cooler.

5. Keep windows and doors closed

For better efficiency and energy conservation, only air condition the room you are currently using by shutting the doors. To regulate temperatures, ensure that windows* are closed to prevent the cold air from escaping and warm air from coming in. When someone is cooking or showering, close the door to that room to keep hot, smoky, or moist air from entering the air conditioned space.

*Excluding the window used for the venting hose. For this window, we recommend using a window kit to seal the gap around the hose.

6. Switch off any appliances that don’t have to be on

Many appliances such as computers, TVs, and others can generate heat, making your air conditioner work harder. This will slow down the cooling process and increase your energy bills. So make sure to switch these off when you’re not using them.
