Why Do I Need A Heat Recovery Extractor Fan?
Heat recovery fans are bathroom extractor fans that warm the incoming fresh air with heat from the air they remove. They are particularly valuable in rooms prone to condensation, such as bathrooms, shower rooms and en-suites, where a standard extractor fan pulls in cold air every time it runs.
How Does A Heat Recovery Extractor Fan Work?
Heat recovery extractor fans are generally continuously running with a ‘trickle’ function which can be boosted when needed using the trigger (normally a pull cord like classic extractor fans). Thanks to its specially designed heat exchanger included in the unit, incoming fresh air is heated by the outgoing hot air at a 75% efficient rate. This can also be switched off during summer months, and the fans can be run only on the boost (without the trickle function).
Energy Efficient Heat Recovery Fans
Another benefit is that heat recovery fans are efficient. By recovering and reusing heat from the exhaust air, heat recovery fans contribute to energy efficiency. This process helps maintain a comfortable indoor temperature with less reliance on additional heating or cooling systems. In addition to heat recovery, heat extractor fans also transfer moisture. This can be advantageous in balancing indoor humidity levels, especially in climates with varying humidity throughout the year.
Choosing a Bathroom Heat Recovery Fan
Single room heat recovery fans come with different controls to suit how the room is used. A pull cord boosts the fan when you need it, a timer keeps it running after you leave the room, and a humidistat boosts it automatically when moisture levels rise. For fitting closer to a bath or shower, SELV (safety extra low voltage) models carry higher IP ratings. Models like the Vent-Axia Lo-Carbon Tempra HTP combine a timer, humidistat and pull cord in one unit.
